ICF CANOE MARATHON WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships in Hungary.
GYŐR, HUNGARY 11-13 SEPTEMBER, 2015

For many of the New Zealand paddlers this is their first marathon world champs – it will be interesting to see how will they go. For Rochelle Austin this will be her third world champs and the second for Matt Loveridge. Good luck to the NZ Team.

Ones to watch: Hank McGregor will be returning to Gyor to defend his world title, 16 years after he first raced here in 1999. Hank will be looking to add to the titles he won in 2011 (Singapore) 2013 (Denmark) and last year's win in Oklahoma. Renátay Csay will also be looking to to remain consistent – and add world title number 15 – making her the one to beat.

Terry Newsome off to the ICF Canoe Marathon World Champs

We’re proud that ipaddle’s own Terry Newsome is at the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships in Hungary. He's putting his technical expertise to good use as part of the race control team. The racing takes place in the picturesque town of Gyor, about halfway between Budapest and Vienna. Check out the video of the course at the bottom of the page. Terry will be posting news and photos to the Nelo NZ Facebook page when he can.

Background to the event and course video

The 1999 World Marathon – a dramatic race for the NZ K2 Team!

This year's racing will be on the same course as the 1999 races, 16 years ago. New Zealand had a small team including K2 crew of Simon McLarin and Finn O'Connor.

It's well worth checking out this footage of the race. You see them on the start line and then just after the start (42 secs) in boat number 32. Terry talked to Simon about the race start and he said that it was fast and there was a strong current and eddy, which turned the K2 almost colliding with another K2! Unfortunately, once they got under control the lead groups had pulled away. This left Finn and Simon to paddle by themselves and slowly working their way back up the field – until they found Norway and Slovakia, which they paddled with to finish in 11th place.

The exciting 1999 K1 race

Looking at the footage you will see a young Hank McGregor up with Great Britian's Ivan Lawler for the first few laps. In the end, Ivan would add another world title to his belt after a sprint finish with Istvan Salga of Hungary.
